David Slack, who is a shift leader at Town & Country Aggregates, has been a supporter of cancer charities since 2008. It has been a cause close to his heart after he joined the company, where fundraising for cancer charities was part of the culture.
His uncle David and aunt Judith were both diagnosed with cancer and were very unwell. As they were a big part of David’s life, he took them to their appointments at The Christie Charity, where they were being treated.
David said that while he was at The Christie, he witnessed how amazing and great the team treating his aunt and uncle were and was a big part of both of their lives.
In 2018, David’s uncle sadly died from his cancer. David decided to organise his own fundraising event to raise money for The Christie Charity – a charity golf competition. Although it was only a small competition that year, the event raised about £2,000.
Sadly, in 2019, David’s aunt Judith died from cancer as well and in 2020, a member of David’s golf club also died from cancer. This inspired David to rename the golf tournament after his late friend: The George Mellor Memorial Trophy.
In 2023, David enlisted the help from local businesses and friends to help make 2023’s George Mellor Memorial Trophy bigger than ever. The golf tournament featured 18 teams of golfers, with support from corporate sponsorship.
Due to all their hard work, David – supported by Steven Morten (TCA’s MD) – raised £4,630 for the charity, which brings David’s fundraising total for The Christie Charity to over £11,000.
Commenting on the 2023 event, David said: “At our local golf club, The High Peak Golf Club, we lost a very popular member to cancer in 2020. From then we renamed the trophy to The George Mellor Memorial Trophy, which has really helped us to get lots of people behind me at the golf club.
“Along with the help of a few friends, we have grown it into a proper event, with food, prizes and giveaways to try to raise as much as possible.”
